Special Handling Unit

The Special Handling Unit ( SHU ), called "The Shu " is the maximum security prison in Canada. It was opened in 1968 and is located in the village of Sainte -Anne -des- Plaines in the southwestern province of Quebec. It is operated by the Correctional Service Canada penitentiary organization. It currently has a capacity of 165 passengers, in 2007 it was occupied by 146 people. The guards with contact with the prisoners do not carry weapons, to prevent occupants to gain some.
