Pink-headed Parrot ( Pionus tumultuosus )

The Pink-headed parrot or purple Fronted Parrot ( Pionus tumultuosus ) is a real Neuweltpapagei in the genus Rotsteißpapageien.

Features

The Pink-headed parrot reaches a total length of 29 centimeters. The basic plumage color is green and is paler on the underside. The feathers on the cheeks are red and have a dark rim. The base of the feathers on the cheeks is creamy white. The feathers on crown and nape is dark red, the feathers on the throat, chin and back of head are brownish - red. The breast plumage is reddish and the under tail-coverts are red with purple markings and yellow-green hem. The middle and outer tail feathers are green and red towards the base. The under wing-coverts and lower surfaces of the wings are dull green. The beak is horn colored. The iris is brown and the feet gray green.

The young birds look similar to adult birds, but their springs to mind, cheeks and chest are still green. In addition, the under tail-coverts are still green and interspersed only towards the root pink.

Occurrence

The Pink-headed Parrot is a resident of the high valleys in the tropical and subtropical zones. Its range extends from north-western and eastern Peru, about east- southeast of Cajamarca La Paz to Cochabamba in Bolivia.

Way of life

Little is known about the life of the rose head parrots. You prefer apparently the altitudes between 2000 and 3000 meters above sea level. Especially in the northern part of its range the species is nomadic. It penetrates only occasionally in the grain -growing areas. The breeding season of the rose head parrot starts in November / December and ends after four months with the fledging of young birds.
