Sphaerites

Sphaerites glabratus

The apparent Stutz beetle ( Sphaeritidae ) represent a family of beetles, of which only one kind in Central Europe by the name Sphaerites occurs glabratus.

Features

The representatives of this group reach body sizes between 5.5 and 7 millimeters. The body is short, oval and resembles that of the Stutz beetles, however, the truncated elytra ( elytra ) cover almost the entire abdomen. The coloring of Sphaerites glabratus is green - blue metallic shimmer, the elytra are covered with conspicuous rows of dots.

Way of life

The beetles feed on liquid resin and tree sap, according to they are found mainly in spring and autumn on the bark of trees with outflowing resin and the resin-impregnated soil.
