Occurrence and habitat

It is essentially an African tropical species that inhabits the south of the Arabian Peninsula (United Arab Emirates, the north of Oman and Yemen), East Africa to Natal, and westward to the Gambia. It also penetrates into the southern part of the Palaearctic and is there in Iran ( provinces of Kerman and Hormozgan, and Baluchistan and the South of Iran ) and the West of Saudi Arabia (north of Jeddah ) documented. Since a Fund in Dschiroft is known in 1850 meters above sea level, it could be that the type can withstand cold, dry air and therefore also occurs in other parts of Iran, or even in the west of Pakistan.

The animals fly, especially in savannas, steppes and semi- deserts of about 1000 meters above sea level.

Way of life

The moths are crepuscular. In Africa can be observed before the start of the night when they visit flowers frequently.

Flight times and caterpillars

The moths fly in March and April, with the capture of a butterfly suggests a second generation per year in Iran in early October. The caterpillars can be found from April to May

Food of the caterpillars

The caterpillars feed on various Rötegewächsen ( Rubiaceae ), such as from Kohautia, Labkräutern ( Galium ), Färberröten ( Rubia ) and Jaubertia.

The caterpillars excrete unlike enthusiasts usual No individual droppings, but stick with one to four centimeters in length. Pupation takes place in a loosely woven brown silk cocoon between plant parts on the ground. The pupa overwinters. Parasitoids of the species are unknown.
