Spilimbergo

Spilimbergo ( Friulian: Spilimbèrc, German: Spengenberg ) is a small town in Friuli in northern Italy. It is located west of the Tagliamento on a plateau and has 12,020 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012).

Attractions

The Gothic cathedral was built in 1284-1359; next to see frescoes can be admired also an organ from the 14th century and a crypt of the Romanesque period.

The Castle of Spengenberg Berger - of this generation is also due the town's name here - comprises a number of buildings from different periods. Parts of the facade are decorated with frescoes, therefore, the castle has been dubbed " Palazzo dipinto " ( painted palace).

The city stood from 1278 to 1509 under Habsburg rule.

The Mosaic School

In the mosaics - old school techniques of mosaics are taught. The school is the end point of a history that dates back to the late 17th century, worked as stonemasons and floor layers from the villages around Spilimbergo on the sites of Venice. Here the mosaic art is more alive than ever and today's workers are the heirs of a very old tradition.

This institute produces massive and valuable works, decorate the airports, universities, royal palaces and cathedrals. Inside, a valuable collection of boxes and mosaic work is kept.
