Spiral Shadow is the fifth studio album by American sludge band Kylesa. As to the predecessors sets the group on this album a two percussionists.

Formation

The title of the album were written by Phillip Cope, Laura Pleasant and Carl McGinley, the songwriting for the album began in January 2010 in Savannah. In the compositions of the band put more emphasis on psychedelic sounds and melodies as in the previous albums. The title song was dedicated Laura Pleasant her cancer-stricken mother. The basic lyrical concept deals with the interpersonal distance and should be a review of the history of the band since its founding in 2001. The recordings took place in June 2010 at the Jam Room in Columbia, South Carolina instead. The album cover comes from the artists Santos. The band wanted a very simple cover with Op -art elements with a motif representing a circuit. The cover shows the endless cycle of a tree trunk, this tree motif continues throughout the booklet. The Op - art elements provided the illustrator Casey McKinley, who also produced a 3D version of the cover for the Limited Edition.

The album was released in late October at Season of Mist and made his debut in the first week at number 14 in the German newcomer charts. In the U.S., the album reached number 11 in the Top Heatseekers. Spiral Shadow was released both on CD and LP in different formats. In addition to a limited edition with two 12 " EPs in gatefold cover a CD version was released with a bonus DVD containing a making of the album.

Phil Freeman of Allmusic called the album as a masterpiece of the band and highlights in particular the use of two drummers. He called Spiral Shadow as a great psychedelic hard rock album. Stephan Voigtländer from the online magazine powermetal.de praises the balance " between massive hardness, tough - psychotic eruptions and catchy melodiousness " and says that the album did not cease to grow. Patrick Schmidt from Rock Hard sees the album compared to the previous Static Tensions relaxed and compressed. He raises his fuzz guitar sound out, the Soul of the " attractive contrast to the multi-faceted Erlebnisdrumming of the two drummers ... " and called the album " great." For Petra Schurer from Metal Hammer, there are not a band that " the balancing act between extreme metal and seventies rock riff effortless ," the magazine chose Spiral Shadow in November 2010 for " Album of the Month ".
