Split Rock Lighthouse State Park

Split Rock Lighthouse State Park is an approximately 839 -acre State Park on the coast of Lake Superior in Minnesota. He is primarily known for the Split Rock Lighthouse, a lighthouse was built in 1910. The park is one of about 340,000 visitors annually.

The state park is located in the northeast of the state, about 25 km north of Two Harbors. Large tracts of the last ice age formed by glaciers in hilly terrain is wooded and offer various hiking and biking trails that are used in the winter for cross country skiing.

In the Split Rock Lighthouse State Park is a camping site. The lighthouse and some surrounding buildings have been restored and decorated in the style of the 1920s. The Minnesota Historical Society now operates a museum. Another attraction is the waterfall at the Split Rock River in the south of the park.

Lighthouse

Split Rock Light is a lighthouse in the State Park. Once in November 1905 during a storm many ships were sunk, the United States Lighthouse Service ordered the construction of the lighthouse on the rocky coast. Ralph Russell Tinkham designed the 40 meter high and around 65,000 U.S. dollars expensive tower. It is built hexagonal brick and reinforced by an internal steel frame. On 31 July 1910 he was put in service. Originally operated with kerosene was lit in 1940 replaced by a 1,000 -watt electric light.

In 1969, the lighthouse one its operation and was taken with the surrounding area in the National Register of Historic Places.
