Spodek

The Spodek is a multipurpose arena in Katowice, Poland. Spodek ( German saucer ) is the name that will be used in the vernacular, officially called the Hall until 1997 Wojewódzka Hala Widowiskowo - Sportowa w Katowicach ( German Hall of the Province of Sports and Events in Katowice ). Today, the hall will operate officially under the name Spodek.

History

As early as 1955, as Katowice Stalinogród called, was thinking about the plan a large event hall. 1959 an architectural competition was conducted. First, the arena was to be built on the outskirts, on the grounds of the Silesian Central Park ( Slaski Park Kultury i Wypoczynku, Wojewódzki Park Kultury i Wypoczynku ). Later, the Woiwodschaftsrat decided the arena near the new to build just north of the old town adjoining the city center.

Due to the new site selection, there was a delay in project execution. The design of the foundation had to be revised, since the new site had mining damage and in the northern part of the site at a depth of 26 m, a coal seam was what had a lower stability of the site result. The construction work began in 1964. Plans for two indoor pools near this complex have not been implemented for cost reasons.

1969 Located next to the Spodek rink was inaugurated. Was completed finally the hall in 1971.

It was designed by architects Hall and Maciej Maciej Gintowt Krasinski and the structural engineer Andrzej Zorawski.

The early seventies, was built right next to the Spodek DOKP skyscraper.

2011, the facade was extensively renovated, the asbestos-containing cladding of the facade had to be replaced. The renovation of the entire plant is to be completed in 2013 and cost 30 million zloty.

Construction

General

In the system, a skating rink, a gymnasium, and a two -star hotel with 50 beds are integrated along with the actual arena. The entire complex has a floor space of 29,473 m² and a volume of 338 732 m³.

The hall roof was built in the form of an inclined Diskusses to a supporting rope construction in Tensegritybauweise. The center of the roof is occupied by a glass dome, which is surrounded by a gallery and provides the arena with daylight.

Other halls have been built on this principle are in Saint Petersburg, Florida, USA and Seoul, South Korea.

Arena

The arena itself has an enclosed space of 246 624 cubic meters, a total floor area of 15,386 m² and a height of 32 m. On the upper part of the grandstand are 7,776 seats, which are divided into a total of 35 sectors. The lower part of the stand can be among the top move and once again offers 1,560 seats. In addition, the interior 1,700 seats can be installed again. The maximum number of audience is 11.500.

Ice rink

The enclosed space is 35,500 cubic meters, the floor area is 5,954 square meters and the height of 11 m. The ice surface is 30 m MX60. It has a seating capacity of 1,182.

Sports hall

The sports hall has a building volume of 11,631 m³ and a surface area of ​​1,490 m². It has room for 362 spectators.

Over the years a large number of well-known bands in the Spodek have given concerts, including Boney M., Eric Clapton, Joe Cocker, The Cure, Deep Purple, Depeche Mode, Electric Light Orchestra, Genesis, Anna German, Green Day, Jean Michel Jarre, Elton John, The Kelly Family, Kraftwerk, Metallica, Pink Floyd, Rammstein, Status Quo, Sting, Tina Turner and Robbie Williams.

Since 1981, the Rawa Blues Festival is held regularly since 1986, the Metal Mania Festival and since 2000 the Mayday Techno Festival in Spodek instead.
