Språkförsvaret

Språkförsvaret ( defense of the language ) is a political party formed in 2005 independent network in order to strengthen the Swedish language and to protect against use of domain losses due to waiver. Språkförsvaret recognizes the importance of English as a foreign language, but believes that its current position as a world language in the long run the survival of other languages, including Swedish threatened.

Språkförsvaret considers that multilingualism is an indisputable value in itself and the Swedish language in Sweden calls for an active and fundamentally different defense than before. In particular, EU membership and increasing internationalization challenge it.

Språkförsvaret drafted its own proposal for a Swedish language law as well as a number of other documents, including about the language policy of the Swedish universities and the Nordic language community. The network was also one of the instances for the assessment of the new language law.

Continuously initiated Språkförsvaret debates and seminars. The position of the Swedish language was discussed at a seminar in 2005 as well as in a public debate in 2007; a seminar in 2008 treated in the Swedish education system. In the fall of 2009, three seminars were held: The place of Swedish in the EU, the Nordic language community and Swedish in Finland. The influence of English on copywriting in Sweden was the subject of a organized in spring 2010 seminar.

Since the entry into force of the language law on July 1, 2009, Språkförsvaret committed to its application to so many areas of society as possible. In this sense, possible applications of the new law will be explored through a series of appeals to the Ombudsman of the Reichstag. Inter alia Språkförsvaret challenged the legitimacy of the government and the English mail addresses received by the ombudsman law.
