Sprüth Magers (art gallery)

The gallery Sprueth Magers is a German art gallery that was founded in 1998 by Monika and Philomene Magers Sprueth. The company has offices in London and Berlin.

History

Monika Sprueth opened in 1983 in Cologne's Old Town their first gallery for women. They fought for aspiring artists like Jenny Holzer, Barbara Kruger, Cindy Sherman and Rosemarie Trockel.

In 1991, Philomene Magers of, also in Cologne, opened a gallery. They focused mainly on an earlier generation of artists represented than that of Sprueth, such as Donald Judd, Robert Morris, Dan Flavin, Ad Reinhardt, John Baldessari and Richard Artschwager; Magers but also showed works by younger artists such as Sylvie Fleury and Karen Kilimnik.

The complementary programs and common interests of Monika Sprueth Philomene Magers and led in 1998 to merge their two galleries; it was followed by offices in Munich, Berlin and London. The Cologne and Munich galleries were closed in 2008.
