Spui (Amsterdam)

Spui is a square in the city center of Amsterdam. The name comes from the river Spui, which formed the southern border of Amsterdam until 1425. As the medieval moat, the Singel, was dug, the river was called another lock, by locals Boerenverdriet ( " Bauer annoyance "). 1882 the Spui was changed by landfills to the present place. He is since 1996 the pedestrian zone.

At the Spui there are many bookstores and every Friday a book market. Every Sunday there is an art market. The Dutch publisher Athenaeum Boekhandel headquartered there. The Hofje Begijnhof one enters from the Spui, where the Oude Kerk are Lutherse ( " Old Lutheran " ) of 1630 and the Maagdenhuis from 1784. In the square stands the statue Lieverdje ( " hope" ) by Carel Kneulman.
