Spytihněv (Zlín District)

Spytihněv ( German Spitinau ) is a municipality in the Czech Republic. It is situated 18 kilometers southwest of Zlín and belongs to Okres Zlín.

Geography

Spytihněv lies in the valley of the Morava, at the left bank. Neighboring towns are Napajedla in the North, Komarov in the northeast, Březolupy in the east, Topolná the southwest, Babice in the south, Březolupy the southwest, Jankovice in the west and Halenkovice in the northwest. History

The founding year of Spytihněv is not known. It is believed that it was created during the reign of Duke Břetislav and was named after his son Spytihněv II. It is here the prince's castle " castrum Zpitignew " have built that served the national defense and to ward off the Hungarian and Polish incursions. At the same time it was a military and administrative center of a larger territory, the left and right stretched the March. Located on the Castle Church fulfilled the function of a spiritual center.

Spytihněv was first documented in 1141 in a directory owned by the Olomouc Bishop Heinrich Zdík, whereby the existence of a parish church is occupied. Probably as a result of a flood was the " castrum Zpitignew " in 1200. Spytihněv was the seat of an archdeaconry, which was renewed under Bishop Bruno of castle. After the expansion of the přemyslidischen power to the south of the city lost its military importance. 1318 came Spytihněv to the bishopric of Olomouc, from which it was sold under Bishop Stanislaus Pavlovský of Pavlovitz 1582 to nobles. Then it lost its meaning and has since been a dominantly agricultural village.
