Sredets

Sredets ( Bulgarian Средец ) is a small town in the municipality of Sredets in Bulgaria's Burgas Oblast. In 2008, it had 9471 inhabitants.

Geography

The city is situated near the Mandra Lake at the northern foothills of the beach Saddle Mountains and about 30 km southwest of the fourth largest Bulgarian city of Burgas.

History

By 1934, the present-day Sredets was called Karabunar. Under the government of Kimon Georgiev, the city was renamed Sredets. In 1950 the city was renamed after the Bulgarian Communist leader Todor Grudow in Grudowo. Since 1960, it has the city status. In the 90s, after the overthrow of the communists, the city got its name Sredets back.

In the 1970s and 80s, the city is the only Bulgarian producer of reinforcing elements made ​​of steel ribs, which was built close Prometsteel AG, owned by the Steel Neva Consortium today.
