Srpski Krstur

Krstur Srpski (Serbian Cyrillic: Српски Крстур, Hungarian Ókeresztúr ) is a town in the municipality of Novi Kneževac in the Serbian Banat District Severni. The place is located in the autonomous province of Vojvodina in Serbia, about five kilometers from the Hungarian and about 20 km from the Romanian border.

Population

The place has according to the last survey 2005 1.396 inhabitants, of whom ask the Serbs an absolute majority. The Roma with about 25 % and Hungary with about 10% form the largest minority of the place.

Geography

Srpski Krstur located in the southern area of the Pannonian Plain in the Banat region. The place is surrounded by agriculturally used fields that dominate almost the entire landscape of the region. The main source of income of the village is agriculture. There is moderate continental climate. In the year falls on average about 500 mm of precipitation. West of Srpski Krsur the Tisza flows forth from the north and heads towards Novi Kneževac locally.

History

Srpski Krstur is mentioned in 1715 under the name Kereztur for the first time. Later, the place got more names such as, inter alia, Papok, Kereztur, Papkereztur, Kistur and Keresztes. The present name Srpski Krstur can be translated with Serbian cross in about.
