St John 's Church is an active parish church of the Anglican Church in High Legh in Cheshire, England. It belongs to the deanery of Knutsford in the Diocese of Chester and is therefore in the ecclesiastical province of York. The Vicariate is united with the parish church of St Paul in Over Tabley. The church was listed by English Heritage on September 3, 1984 as a historic building at Grade II.

History

St John's emerged from a chapel for High Legh East Hall. It was built in 1814 with an ionic front facade, designed by Thomas Harrison. This chapel burned down in 1891. The remaining stone walls served as the basis for the new church, which was designed in 1893 by Edmund Kirby. The roof was re-roofed in 1982. In 2008 a new stained glass window was used, representing the Christ and the fishermen. It was designed by Roy Coomber and manufactured by Pendle Stained Glass.

Architecture

The church is built of cut stones and bricks, the roof is covered brick. On the outside of the timber with the plastered fillings is striking. The exterior is completely brick bricked However, the framework is only for decorative purposes. The plan of the church has a narthex at the west end, a nave with three bays with a porch and a protruding vestry on the south side as well as the sanctuary. Above the narthex stands a two-stage steeple. The foregoing west front of the narthex has a centrally located window with four casements and one smaller window with two sashes on both sides thereof. There is a running and timber frame gable above the windows. The lower floor of the tower includes large windows with four mullions and transom windows above and similar side windows. Furthermore, there is another gable. The upper floor of the tower consists of the masonry brick belfry openings with concealed by blinds. In sitting the roof with the leaden spire. The south side of the church is closely studded and includes four Fensterfflügeln provided window with tracery in Perpendicular style. The sacristy has a pent roof and a sechsflügligen window.
