St Katharine's by the Tower

The Royal Foundation of St Katharine is a foundation in London. It goes back to a dedication by Queen Matilda in the year 1146 and since then has been under the auspices of the English queens. Today she resides in the Butcher Row in London's East End at the site of the former St James 's Church. The Royal Foundation continues to be an Anglican community whose members take care of pastoral care and social work.

On the lands of the Foundation, which lay immediately to the east of the boundary of the City of London, several thousand people settled over the centuries at the Precinct of St Catherine. For the construction of the St. Katharine Docks in 1825, residents and hospital had to leave the grounds. While most residents received no compensation, and the Foundation was able to build new buildings in Regent's Park. After the Second World War, the Foundation went back to the East End.
