St Mary's Cathedral, Killarney

The Marie Killarney Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Killarney in County Kerry. She is also the episcopal church of the diocese of Kerry.

History

Before the neo-Gothic cathedral was built from Killarney, found the fairs are held in a small chapel. Joseph O'Sullivan, a pastor from Dingle, had the idea for the construction of a cathedral; Bishop Cornelius Egan and a local nobleman were enthusiastic about the idea.

1828, a committee was established to build a cathedral. 1840 prepared by the architect Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin to a blueprint for the cathedral. In the summer of 1842 we laid the foundation. In May 1848, the construction work came because of the great famine in Ireland to a standstill.

At the beginning of 1853 the construction was resumed under the direction of JJ McCarthy. On August 22, 1855, the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was consecrated.

It is the third largest cathedral in Ireland. Its tower is 86.8 meters high.
