The St. Volodymyr's Cathedral (Ukrainian Володимирський собор / Wolodymyrskyj Sobor ) is located on Taras Shevchenko Boulevard in the center of the Ukrainian capital Kiev.

The Volodymyr's Cathedral is the most important of the Kiev Patriarchate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, was built 1859-1882. The interior of the cathedral Neo-Byzantine style was still completed until 1886. Some paintings were later completed, so that the consecration of the church took place in 1896 and it was opened on 1 September (Gregorian calendar ) of the year. At a building several architects and artists were involved.

History

The plan to build the cathedral was already at 1852 to ( the predecessor states of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus ) by Vladimir to celebrate the 900 th anniversary of the introduction of Christianity in Kievan Rus to the saints. The donor-supported construction began in 1859; the building itself was completed in 1882, the richly decorated interior was not completed until 1886. In the Polish-Soviet War, the cathedral was damaged and was subsequently used as atheism Museum, which also dealt with the subject of religion. Later it became an archive. Since 1944, and after the Second World War it was used again as a religious building. By the end of the Soviet Union, the priests, however, were limited in the exercise of their duties.

Appearance

The 49 -meter-high cathedral has seven gilded domes, and three apses inside and six piers. It is richly decorated with mosaics and frescoes. The paintings inside are from famous Russian painters such as Mikhail Vasilyevich Nesterov, Viktor Mikhailovich Vasnetsov and Mikhail Aleksandrovich Vrubel.

In Volodymyr keeps relics of Saint Barbara, which were outsourced to the destruction of the main church of St. Michael monastery in the 1930s here.
