St. Francis High School (Traverse City, Michigan)

The Grand Traverse Area Catholic Schools ( GTACS ) are schools of the Roman Catholic church in the county seat of Grand Traverse County, Traverse City, and is part of the Diocese of Gaylord. The school is divided into four parts: The Kindergarten and Elementary School Holy Angels, the Immaculate Conception Elementary School, the Middle School St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and the High School Saint Francis.

History

In 1877, the monk George Ziegler asked the Dominican order to the shipment of nuns that could go to school for the youth of the parish of Saint Francis of Traverse City. Then, six nuns made ​​their way from New York City to Traverse City, where she opened a school on October 29, 1877; at this time visited these six students, but the number grew steadily, and only two months later, it was already reached fifty students.

The first building, the Holy Angels Academy was created, the opening ceremony took place in September 1883 by the Bishop of Grand Rapids, Henry Richter, instead. The building was used until 1893 as a school and as a convent until 1971, after which it was demolished and the nuns moved to a neighboring house to. In 1902 a new parish was established in Traverse City, which was named after the dogma of the Immaculate Conception Immaculate Conception, and was integrated a school for 80 students in their first church building, which was opened on 22 February 1906. This was opened with the new school year on 1 September of the same year and had four classrooms, of which only three were used.

Today's Holy Angels Elementary School referred as St. Francis Elementary School its present building in January 1955, which consisted of 14 classrooms and a space for leisure hours. Were affiliated to the school sports hall, which was opened on November 26, 1954, and a cafeteria.

On May 29, 1997 started the construction of a new school building on the outskirts of Traverse City for the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, the school could start on 1 September 1998. The building consists of eleven classrooms, two laboratories, each with a music and art room as well as a built in an assembly hall cafeteria. The school can attend a total of 325 students. At the same time it was also decided that Saint Francis Elementary School renamed in memory of the origins in Holy Angels. Today only the high school is named after Saint Francis.
