The opening of the station took place on December 24, 1868 by the Metropolitan District Railway (predecessor company of the District Line ), as part of the first section between South Kensington and Westminster. The original station building was rebuilt after 1900 - in connection with the construction of the Electric Railway House, the headquarters of the Underground Electric Railways Company of London ( UERL ). Between 1926 and 1929 the station was on the high-rise 55 Broadway, the new headquarters of UERL. The old station building was demolished.

The design of high-rise building in the Art Deco style comes from Charles Holden, the former " house architect " of the London Underground. On the ground floor there is a shopping arcade, while in the floors above, the management of the London Underground is housed. On the platform level, the original e-mail items and benches have been preserved from wood. The walls of the main hall on the ground floor of the landmark high-rise building are covered with marble.
