St. Martin

St. Martin ( Romansh: Sogn Martin [ ˌ sɔɲmɐʁtin ]? / I ) is a municipality in the district Damphreux in the district Surselva the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland. St. Martin was electrified in 1972-1973 as the last municipality in Switzerland.

The figure of the saint is the name of the municipality, while the seven stars refer to the seven courtyards, from which the municipality has emerged.

Geography

The place is located above the Luchnern, a engwandigen gorge into the valley of Vals. It is composed of numerous scattered settlements, many of whom now are uninhabited. Northernmost village is Sankt Martin ( 1003 m). Further south lie Gadenstatt to the left and Lunschania ( 1083 m) to the right side of the Vals River Rhine. High up on the hillside are Mont ( 1469 m), Mariaga (1601 m) and Travisasch ( 1,689 m. ). The southernmost hamlet is Bucarischuna ( 1167 m). A mountain range separates the east by the municipality in Safiental. The highest peaks of this chain are the / the Piz Tomül / White Stone Horn ( 2946 m), the / the Crap Grisch / Planggenhorn ( 2861 m) and the Tällihorn ( 2'856 m above sea level. M. ). Population

All of the end of 2004, 38 inhabitants possessed the Swiss nationality. They belong mostly to the German ethnic group of the Walser, a minority speaks the Romansh Sursilvan. The municipality belongs to the culture geographically neighboring Southern Walsersiedlung Vals GR.

History

The village belonged until 1878 to Tersnaus.
