St. Peter's Abbey on the Madron

The monastery of St. Peter am Madron is a former Benedictine monastery on the Little Madron also called Petersberg in Flintsbach. The municipality is located in Bavaria and now belongs to the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising.

History

The St. Peter consecrated monastery was founded in 1130 by Count Siboto of Falkenstein and colonized by monks from the monastery of Weihenstephan. It was destroyed in 1296 and never rebuilt. Only the Sanctuary remained. From the 14th century until 1803 Madron was Titularpropstei of Freising canons. 1803 could be prevented by their purchase with funds from the local farmers after the secularisation of Bavaria in the demolition of the church. The last renovation was done in 1972.
