St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana

The St. Tammany Parish (French: Paroisse de Saint- Tammany ) is a parish located in the state of Louisiana in the United States. In 2010, the Parish had 233 740 inhabitants and a population density of 154.5 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( Parish Seat) is Covington.

Geography

The Parish is located in southeastern Louisiana, to the east by Mississippi, is located in the southeast about 30 km from the Gulf of Mexico and has an area of ​​2911 square kilometers, of which 699 square kilometers are water surface.

History

St. Tammany Parish was formed in 1810 from parts of the West Florida territory. It was named (1628-1698), chief of the Lenni Lenape after Tamanend.
