Stabskapitän

The staff captain in the cavalry and staff captain, is a historic military rank that was used in the Prussian and Russian armies. He was between the First Lieutenant (later Lieutenant ) and the Captain / Captain. Another name was Lieutenant ( Captain - Lieutenant). He represented the actual captain and company commander often in his absence.

This could however also be permanent if this most noble captain, for example, had no " interest" in the company leadership - but for prestige and status reasons, was dependent on the rank " Captain " and wearing the uniform as part of the company business.

In the German armies of the 18th century, the Colonel and the other staff officers of a regiment were mostly each owner of a company within the regiment and respect in addition to their service base salary then important income of the owner position, while those officers who actually led the company, the title of Staff Captain occupied and a comparatively very low incomes had. For this contrast, the content difference of the captains first and second class, for example, later developed in the Bavarian army before in 1871.

Imperial Russian Army

In the Russian army the Staff Captain was a rank between the captain and the lieutenant. To be the equivalent ranks:

  • Cavalry - Staff Captain (Russian Stabsrotmistr )
  • Cossack army - Unterjesaul / Jesaul Substitute ( ru: Podesault )
