The Stade des Costières is a football stadium in Nimes, Gard in the Languedoc -Roussillon (France). It is mainly used by Olympique Nîmes.

History

The stadium was in 1987 brought Nîmes then mayor Jean Bousquet on the way. It was designed by the architect Marc Chausse and Vittorio Gregotti. Gregotti was also responsible for the conversion of the Stadio Luigi Ferraris in Genoa. Inside the arena there are facilities for basketball, fitness, fencing and martial arts. The name of the stadium dates back to the wine region Costières de Nîmes.

On 15 February 1989, the venue of the football match France was opened against the Netherlands. The first match of Olympique Nimes kicked off on March 4, 1989 against FC Montceau Bourgogne. The second league game was played in front of 3647 spectators. Most users ever comes from the Erstligasaison 1991/1992 with the game against Olympique Nîmes Olympique Marseille. The game saw 25 051 spectators. After the drama of Furiani the stages were checked for their safety. The result was that the total capacity was set at 29 497 places. By today's safety regulations the stadium for 18,364 is allowed.

In the season 2004/2005 FC Istres played some games in Nimes. The old stadium was too small and outdated and the new building is not finished yet. The SC Bastia had his last two season games 2005/2006 on neutral court and did so at the Stade des Costières.
