Staircases in Mariahilf

The 6th district of Vienna Mariahilf has in common with the 9th district of Vienna Alsergrund on the steepest topography in the Viennese districts. To compensate for level differences, which make up almost 30 meters in altitude between the Wien River and Mariahilferstraße, numerous exposed stairways were built:

  • Built in 1862 Amonstiege connects the Stiegengasse with Windmühlgasse. There is the lower entrance to Raimundhof, a halfway house to Mariahilferstrasse 45 with courtyard side stairs.
  • The Capistranstiege was built in the 1980s and combines the Capistrangasse with the Fillgradergasse.
  • The Cornelius staircase in its present form was completed in 1957 and connects the Cornelius alley with the Gumpendorferstraße.
  • The Filigraderstiege was built in 1907-1907 to designs by the architect Max Hegele. The Art Nouveau -Stieg system combines the Fillgradergasse with Theobald alley.
  • The Rahlstiege in its present form was completed in 1870, at this point, but already existed in the 18th century staircase. It combines the Rahlgasse with Mariahilferstraße. At the top of the stairs is the designed by Anton Paul Wagner goose girl fountain.
  • The Viktor Matejka - staircase connects the Kaunitzgasse with the Eggerthgasse and Luftbadgasse. Her name was originally Eggerthstiege and was named after Viktor Matejka 1998.

The Filigraderstiege, Viktor Matejka - stairs and Rahlstiege and the goose girl fountain in the Rahlstiege are now a protected monument.
