Stanislaus Hosius

Stanislaus Hosius ( born May 5, 1504 Krakow; † August 5, 1579 in Capranica in Rome ) has joined as a Catholic theologian for the maintenance of the exempt status of the Prince-Bishopric of Warmia and obtaining or recovering one of Catholicism in Warmia and Poland. He founded the still existing Lyceum Hosianum in Brown Mountain.

Life

As a child of from Pforzheim in Baden -derived Ulrich Hosse, who served as master of the mint in Cracow, and his wife Anna Stanislaus Hosius learned from an early age in German and Polish, Late Latin came about. At fifteen he entered into the Krakow University and graduated in 1520 from his study of the arts. The talented young man found a patron in Tomicki Peter, bishop of Cracow, who was also Vice-Chancellor of Poland. In this, he worked as private secretary to him some years later, the study of theology and jurisprudence at the universities of Padua and Bologna allowed the bishop. 1534 he finished his studies there as a doctor of canon and civil law, and returned to Krakow.

His father, Ulrich Hosse, which for Sigismund I worked for a time in Krakow, then became Master of the Mint, later mayor of Vilnius in Lithuania.

In Krakow, Stanislaus Hosius took a job in the royal chancery. After the death of his mentor in 1535, he kept his place under his successor Bishop of Płock Choinski, the new Vice-Chancellor. The Bishop of Płock died in 1538, and in consequence Hosius was appointed royal secretary. His administrative talent won the favor of King Sigismund what this rewarded with various church ministries.

In 1543 he was ordained a priest. When in 1549 the bishopric should be reassigned in Kulm, the election of the king fell on Stanislaus Hosius. A year later Pope Paul IV assigned him to fight against Protestantism, which was strong on the rise. 1559 Paul IV died and his successor Pius IV sent Stanislaus Hosius as legate to the Imperial court in Vienna. He had to negotiate the contract with Emperor Ferdinand I of the reopening of the Council of Trent (1545-1563 ). Trent was a part of the Empire, and there was located the chief prince bishopric. In recognition of the successful completion of this mission Hosius was raised on February 26, 1561 cardinal, was the titular church of San Lorenzo in Panisperna and participated as one of the papal legate at the Council. Stanislaus Hosius in 1563 returned back to Warmia. During his absence, Protestantism had spread and he took measures to improve the training of Catholic priests and preachers.
