Stanisław Grzesiuk

Stanisław Grzesiuk ( born May 6, 1918 in Malkow ( county Łęczna in Chelm ), † January 21, 1963 in Warsaw) was a Polish writer, folk singer, former concentration camp prisoner, a professional electrician.

His father was a locksmith, working in a steam engine factory. 1920 settled his parents to Warsaw. Spent his youth in the district Grzesiuk Czerniaków, the Warsaw proletarian district.

At the beginning of World War II Grzesiuk participated in resistance activities. He was deported as forced laborers to Koblenz, while trying to escape, he was arrested on April 4, 1940 and came to Dachau. On August 16, 1940, he came to Mauthausen, where he survived until liberation by the Americans on May 5, 1945. In prison, he fell ill with pulmonary tuberculosis.

On 9 July 1945, he returned home to Poland. He married in 1946, was the father of Eva ( 1947-2003 ) and Marek ( 1950-2007 ).

Grzesiuk was a convinced atheist and a socialist. He was elected to the Warsaw City Council.

He has written three autobiographical books: Pięć lat kacetu ( Five years KZ), Boso, ale w ostrogach ( Barefoot, but in spores) and Na marginesie życia ( On the edge of life).

He often appeared on television and on the concerts as a folk singer with the Warsaw folklore, with banjo or mandolin accompaniment. He was the last singer of the real Warsaw dialect.
