Stanisław Kozierowski

Stanisław Kozierowski (* 1874 in Trzemeszno ( Greater Poland ) (English: Tremessen, Poznan ) Province; † Winna Góra in, community Środa Wielkopolska 1949) was a Polish priest and historian. He was a professor of the Poznań University and in 1919 one of its co-founder after the regaining of independence of the Republic of Poland. He also belonged to the Polish Academy of scholarship ( Polska Akademia Umiejętności ) to.

In the German bibliography it is also called Stanislaus Kozierowski, sometimes expanded to include the name of the coat of arms of the family Kozierowski in Polish sources: Stanisław Dołęga - Kozierowski.

Stanisław Kozierowski specialized in the study of the history of Greater Poland and Pomerania, as well as auxiliary sciences of history and linguistics, such as the heraldry and onomastics.

His most important work with regard to the German -speaking world is the originally planned four volumes Atlas of the geographical names of the western Slavic areas (Atlas nazw geograficznych Słowiańszczyzny Zachodniej ), published by the two volumes that deal with today's northeastern Germany and northwestern Poland. Although controversial in its scientific value, the Atlas is normative of high value and was used in this sense in the definition of official Polish place names in the Polish northern and western territories after 1945. Excerpts from Kozierowskis Atlas are to be found in the list of Polish exonyms for German toponyms.
