Stanley Bate

Stanley Richard Bate ( born December 12, 1911 in Plymouth, † October 19, 1959 in London) was an English composer.

Life

Stanley Bate studied from 1932 to 1936 at the Royal College of Music, where he studied composition with Ralph Vaughan Williams. From 1936 to 1937 he was in Paris pupil of Nadia Boulanger (and possibly Maurice Ravel ) and at the Hochschule für Musik Berlin by Paul Hindemith. In 1937 he returned to England and became musical director of the Phoenix Theatre in London. In 1938 he married the composer Peggy Glanville - Hicks.

He and his wife traveled from 1939 to 1940 by Australia, where he performed as a pianist. Until 1944 he lived in the U.S., where many of his works with him were successfully listed as a soloist. In 1945 he undertook a journey through Brazil, where he performed in front of Heitor Villa -Lobos and several radio concerts conducted. Between 1946 and 1949 he lived again in the USA. In 1949 he returned to England and settled in London. At the 10th Annual Cheltenham Festival of British Contemporary Music in 1954 his 3rd Symphony was performed with great success. Shortly before his death in 1958 he undertook a concert tour in the United States, and Yugoslavia.

Bate was a prolific composer. He created operas, ballets and film scores, symphonies and instrumental concertos, chamber music, piano sonatas and numerous songs.
