Stari Grad, Croatia

Stari Grad ( Old City for Croatian, Italian Cittavecchia, Greek in ancient Pharos ) is a port town in the western part of the island of Hvar in Croatia Split-Dalmatia County. The port is one of the most important on the island. The town has 1,885 inhabitants ( 2011 census ), making it the second largest town of Hvar on the island.

Stari Grad is connected to the mainland by a ferry to Split, Pescara and Ancona and the coastal ferry Rijeka - Dubrovnik connected.

2008, since ancient agricultural plain was taken east of the town of Stari Grad on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. For excellent site also created between the 16th and 19th century historical old town is on the south side of the harbor.

History

The original settlement ( Pharos ) was founded in 384 BC by Greek colonists after they had broken the resistance of the altansässigen Illyrians. Mosaics under the pavement bear witness to the past. Since 1205 Stari Grad appears under the name Civitas Vetus. In the 16th century the poet Petar Hektorović built a mansion still preserved.
