State Committee on the State of Emergency

The State Committee for the State of Emergency (Russian Государственный комитет по чрезвычайному положению ) was a group of Soviet officials who carried out the August coup against Mikhail Gorbachev in 1991.

Fate of the rebels

After the failure of the coup eluded Boris Pugo arrest by suicide. The other members of the committee have been removed from their posts and charged after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The Russian State Duma they amnestied in 1994., The commander of the land forces at the time of the coup, Army General Valentin Ivanovich Varennikov, was not a member of the committee, refused amnesty and was acquitted of obeying orders.

The preparations for the coup took place in the secret Guest Residence ABZ place ( архивно - библиотечный центр ) of the KGB, which is located in the southwest of Moscow.

On the site there is also the forensic laboratory, founded in 1977 NII -2 ( научно - исследовательский институт ), which today is part of the FSB.
