The town's name probably derives from the Old Germanic Stębark word bar (as Sztem - spoken as well as by the regular change of the word part -berg in mnd - bark, similar Tymbark; German Tannen -berg, Szymbark, Szembark, Lidzbark etc. ) and means Stanges mountain back. The problems associated with the letters - ę - fastening briefly explained.
