Steering damper

Steering dampers are used in motorcycles and on bicycles to avoid the dangerous kickback when unloaded and the front wheel off. Also undesired vibrations in the steering system such as the high speed oscillation can be reduced. The dampers work basically the same as shock absorbers. The attenuation at train and pressure is equal.

Steering damper in Automobiles

Steering dampers have been ( with other steering structures) used formerly in cars: The VW Beetle from August 1964 ( model year '65 ) is a prominent example of this: If it is ( it is well hidden under the tank transverse) a steering damper installed. The models with so-called long front and rack and pinion steering ( 1303 sedan and convertible from August '74 ), however, you do not need him. The old chassis design with the smooth worm and sector benefited, however, from the very steering damper. Since the racks Steering modern car has sufficient internal friction, in this today's popular design principle of a steering damper is not needed in most cases. Exceptions are sporty designed cars with smoother steering, without damping tends to flutter: The Mercedes -Benz SLK to 2004, for example, has a hydraulically damped recirculating ball steering.
