Ştefan Birtalan ( born September 25, 1948 in Zalău ) is a former Romanian handball player and coach.

Career

Birtalan lived the first ten years of his life in Zalău and then moved to after Jibou. Here he joined in 1964 his first handball club, Rapid CFR Jibou on. In 1967 he moved to Minerul Baia Mare and ran from 1970 for the Romanian club Steaua Bucharest on top. With Steaua Bucharest the back player In 1977 he won the European Champions Cup and several national titles. In 1985 he became player-coach Italy, where he was active for a year in Florence. Birtalan then ended his career and joined the coaching team at Steaua Bucharest, where he was head coach from 1991 to 1994. In parallel, he coached 1986-1992 the Romanian youth team from 1992 to 1993, the Romanian national team. From 1995 Birtalan trained for four years, the Qatari national team. In 1999 he returned to the dugout for Steaua. 2002 had to quit his coaching job Birtalan due to disease from hepatitis C.
