Ștefan Golescu

Ştefan Golescu (* 1809 in Câmpulung Muscel † August 27, 1874 in Nancy) was Romanian statesman and brother of Nicolae Golescu.

Life

To 1809 Ştefan Golescu was born the son of the scholar Dinicu Golescu and his wife Zoe Farfarain in Câmpulung Muscel. He had four siblings. He was later educated in Geneva, entered the military service initially and later held several higher civil administrations.

He took part in the revolution of 1848 and went as an exile to France. On his return home, he was appointed as a deputy member of the divan ad hoc and later held the office of President of the Control Commission for finance and economic policy, from which he resigned in 1861, however.

After the accession of Prince Charles in 1867, he was Secretary of State under the government Constantin A. Kretzulescu in March. From August 1867 to November 1867 he was also Prime Minister and Minister of Interior of Romania, then until May 1869 Prime Minister. After the change of government his brother Nicolae Golescu became Prime Minister of Romania. He had the same political direction as Nicolae Golescu, only sharper.
