Stefan Sonvilla-Weiss

Stefan Sonvilla - Weiss ( born April 10, 1961 as Stefan Weiss in Wels ) is an Austrian media theorist, artist and art educator. Since 2003 he is professor at the Aalto University in the Department of Art, Design and Architecture Helsinki.

Life

According to the studies of philosophy, art education and business education at the University of Music, Drama and Visual Arts Mozarteum, painting and animation with Maria Lassnig, computer graphics and computer animation with Peter Weibel at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, he graduated in the MA Initially, he worked as an artist and as a teacher in secondary schools in Vienna and Salzburg.

He is married to Barbara Sonvilla and father of two children.

In addition to numerous exhibitions, Sonvilla -Weiss continued since the early 1990s deals with the computer as a creative and interactive medium. After a brief period of study at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology ( MIT), Cambridge, he founded a media office in Vienna and developed numerous interactive CD -Rom and web projects, primarily in art and education. The doctoral program in communication theory and pictorial education completed Sonvilla - white with a dissertation on " participatory media culture in the virtual educational landscape of Austria" in Manfred Fassler and a Ph.D. Dr. phil. at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Since the mid- 1990s, he works as a media artist, university teacher, multimedia developer and initiator of numerous projects in arts media education area. Since 2001 Sonvilla -Weiss worked as a project manager and researcher in virtual education operates on the EUN in Brussels. 2003 he was appointed professor at the University of Art and Design Helsinki, which was renamed in Aalto University since January 1, 2010. He is Director of the Master of Arts degree " ePedagogy Design - Visual Knowledge Building, which in 2007 was awarded by the European Commission as a success story in the context of innovative curriculum projects.

From Sonvilla - white, the term Visual Knowledge Building dates. In his research, he tries to find answers as interactions can lead to new forms of communicative, creative and social practices in globally networked real and virtual spaces. Sonvilla -Weiss deals with the cognitive, social, technological and aesthetic dimensions of a data culture that require new ways of imparting practices and strategies artistic and scientific debate.
