Stefansson Island

Stefansson Iceland is an uninhabited island in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, located a few kilometers north of Victoria Island. In the north Stefansson Iceland is adjacent to the Viscount Melville Sound, on the east by the McClintock Channel and on the southwest by the Goldsmith Channel, which they (the Storkerson Peninsula or ) separates from Victoria Island in places less than 400 meters away. The almost 100 km long and 4463 km ² large island belongs politically to the Canadian territory of Nunavut ranks among the largest islands of Canada an 27th place. Officially, the island was discovered in 1917 by participants of an expedition of the polar explorer Vilhjálmur Stefánsson, although she was the Inuit known for a long time.

The highest peak is located in the north of the island and has a height of only 313 m. The landscape of the relatively flat and barren island is characterized by interspersed with many small lakes and ponds tundra. In the more fertile valleys small herds of Peary caribou (Rangifer tarandus peary ) and muskoxen occur (Ovibos moschatus ).
