Steffen Freund ( born January 19, 1970 in Brandenburg an der Havel ) is a German football coach and former football player.

Playing career

Club level

Friend began at age six at the BSG Motor Sued Brandenburg. As a student, he joined the BSG Stahl Brandenburg, where he rose from junior level up in the GDR Oberliga team.

In 1991 he moved to the Bundesliga for FC Schalke 04, where he became an important midfielder. For financial reasons friend was sold to Borussia Dortmund in 1993 and played there until 1999 117 Bundesliga matches of. Coaching career

For the African Nations Cup in 2008, he supported as an assistant coach the national team of Nigeria, Berti Vogts, to then go back to work as an assistant coach of the German U-20 national team. In May 2009, he successfully completed the training to become football coach. On 17 July 2009 a friend was introduced as the new coach of the U-16 national team. A year later, he was coach of the U-17 national team, with which he was Vice-European Champion in 2011 and finished 3rd in the U- 17 World Cup in Mexico. He then took the DFB again the new U-16 vintage. On 11 July 2012, he returned to Tottenham Hotspur and signed a contract as an assistant coach André Villas -Boas.

Remarkable

During a UEFA Cup game in 1993, Steffen Freund swallowed by a neck shot out his tongue. Substitute Lothar Sippel saved his life.
