Features

Butterfly

The moth has a wingspan of 17-22 millimeters. The ground color of the wings is cream to light brown. The drawing is very variable in detail. Characteristic are usually three brown spots on the front edge of the front wing and two brown transverse lines. However, there are also copies with almost extinct transverse lines. The hem line typically shows through a tapered rounded bulge to the apex. The wings can be more or less dusted brown, and therefore more brown spots may be present. In some specimens passing through the Überstäubung out the wing venation. The hind wings have the same color as the fore wings, but it is only a transverse line present.

Caterpillar and chrysalis

The bead can be provided with a green reddish brown, broken back line, or it is brown with a bright, broken back line. The pupa is brown and has two diverging bristles on the cremaster.

Dissemination

The species is widespread in North Africa and Western Europe and the Western Mediterranean Europe ( Iberian Peninsula, Italy ). But you lack in Southeastern Europe ( Balkan Peninsula). There are only evidence from Slovenia and Dalmatia ( Croatia) before. After Belgium and the Netherlands, it seems to have come only in the last 20 years. From England just found is known. In Germany it is only immigrated during the 20th century. Today, it is, however, also found in many other heat- favored areas of Germany. In the northeast finds are reported to to Brandenburg. The species is also found in Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan outside Europe. These occurrences are not confirmed by Leraut ( 2009).

Occurrence

The species occurs mainly in river valleys and woodland, where poplar trees grow, but also in the open landscape with poplar plantations. In Germany they preferred heat- favored areas. It rises in the Alps up to 1,000 meters above sea level, but in Germany it is limited to the plains and the flat hills under 200 to 300 meters. The species is only being distributed very locally and not frequent.

Way of life

The three- patch - clamp poplar forms two, their moth fly partly overlapping generations per year from May to June and from July to August. At higher altitudes the generations occur somewhat later in appearance. The moths were observed on lime blossom nectar sucking. They fly at night and are attracted by artificial light sources. During the day they sit on poplar trunks or in the grass. They occasionally fly during the day. Eggs are laid exclusively on the leaves of various species of poplar (Populus ). The caterpillars are found from June to August. Pupation takes place in a spunbonded sheet, the doll wintered. In the spring, then slip the butterfly.

Endangering

The species is classified as endangered ( category 2) in Bavaria, Rhineland -Palatinate as endangered ( category 3). In contrast, the authors of the work, " The Butterflies of Baden-Württemberg " interpret the species as Arealvergrößerer, which means that they are currently expanding their range to the north and northeast.
