The Steiger head, also popularly known Schänzel, near Edenkoben in Rhineland-Palatinate County Southern Wine Route is a 613.6 m above sea level. NHN high mountain in the Palatinate Forest. On the belonging to Gommersheim summit stands the Schänzelturm.

Geographical location

The Steiger head is located in the eastern area of the Palatinate Forest in the Palatinate Forest Nature Park. Its summit rises about 7 kilometers (km) west-northwest of the small town Edenkoben on the western edge of a group of mountains, all of which are over 600 m high; 4 km north-east rises the highest mountain in the Palatinate Forest, the Kalmit ( 672.6 m). The mountain peaks and particularly northeast of it located mountain parts belong to the forest district of Gommersheim which lies about 17 kilometers west of Gommersheim an exclave of this local church. Geologically, the Steiger head represents the North West rotor of the 661.8 m high boiler mountain whose summit is 2 km (in each case a straight line ). On the southwest side of the mountain, on which lies the Gommersheimer forest, springs from the fashion stream, a right tributary of Speyer Bach.

History

Schänzel

In the vernacular of the Steiger head is also called " Schänzel " there since about 4500 Prussian soldiers put up several hills in the summer of 1794. You should stop the 7000 men counted French revolutionary troops who were preparing to conquer the German territories left of the Rhine. In the loss-making decisive battle on 12 and July 13, 1794 won the French, after they had been out on the second day by a local hunter from the nearby local church Dernbach in the back of the Prussians. The Prussian commander, General Theodor Philipp of Peacock (1727-1794) became severely wounded in captivity and died the same day.

Schänzelturm

In memory of the defeated Prussia was built a hundred years after the event and in the consciousness of 1871 gained Franco-German War on the summit of the Schänzelturm. This is an octagonal observation tower which is 13 meters high and was built of hewn sandstone. The observation deck on the tower roof is secured by a railing.

The observation tower was dedicated in 1894 by Schänzelturmverein Edenkoben:

" To the memory of the brave Prussian warriors, who in the struggle against the French invasion army on July 13, 1794 here the hero for the German fatherland died "

Dedications

1796 was the Austrian Field Marshal Earl of Dagobert Wurmser erect a memorial at the riser head for General of peacock. The so-called hero stone bears the following partially rhymed inscription:

" The Anno 1794 remained before the enemy generals of royal preusischen Mr. Peacock. / As hero and Biedermann known / Peacock died for the German fatherland. / As a friend of noble valor / was dedicated to him this monument. / From the Imperial and Royal Field Marshall Earl of Dagobert Wurmser 1796 "

As an additional reminder of the battles of 1794, the Knights stones were erected with the numbers 62 to 68 in the 20th century on the Steiger head.

Transport links

Access to the riser head via an approximately 10 kilometer long driveway up of Edenkoben leads west-north- west, around the top, left- arc describes and then through Modenbachtal reached down in a southeasterly direction Burrweiler. It overcomes twice more than 400 meters and is classified as " particularly scenic route ".
