Stein Tønnesson

Stone D. Tonnesson ( born December 2, 1953) is a Norwegian historian. Since 2001 he is the director of the International Peace Research Institute Oslo ( PRIO ).

Life

Tonnesson studied at the universities of Aarhus and Oslo. In 1991 he received his doctorate in Oslo in history and then received his doctorate phil. He conducted research on the topics Revolution, Vietnam War, national unity in Southeast Asia, conflicts in the South China Sea and Norwegian sports history. Tonnesson also worked as a journalist. His interests in the past 10 years were particularly global history, globalization and the decades of relative peace in Southeast Asia since 1979.

Tonnesson was Professor for the Study of Human Development at the Centre for Development and Environment at the University of Oslo and a research fellow at the Nordic Institute of Asian Studies ( NIAS ) in Copenhagen. He has published numerous books on his research area.

Tonnesson is married to the Norwegian historian Bodil Stenseth.
