Stellenbosch is a municipality in the district of Cape Winelands, Western Cape Province in South Africa. In 2007 the population was 200 527 with a total area of 831 km ². The seat of the municipality is the town of Stellenbosch.

Its name from the church by the Governor of the Cape Colony, Simon van der Stel, on November 6, 1679 during an expedition. He named it after himself (derived " van der Stels bush or forest ").
