Steny Hoyer

Steny Hoyer Hamilton ( born June 14, 1939 in New York City ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party. Since 1981 he has been Member of Parliament in the House of Representatives for the fifth electoral district of the state of Maryland. After the Democratic victory in elections to the House of Representatives in 2006, he was on 16 November 2006 for House Majority Leader ( Leader of the ( democratic ) majority group ) selected. Since 2011, he practices again the function of the House minority whips.

Biography

Hoyer was born in New York City, but in Mitchellville (Maryland) grew up. His name refers to his ancestors who came from Denmark ( the family name was originally " Høyer " and was later anglicised ). He graduated from Suitland High School in Suitland, Maryland and graduated in 1963 with the evaluation magna cum laude from the University of Maryland, College Park. He was also a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. In 1966 he received a doctorate degree in law ( JD) degree from Georgetown University in Washington.

Hoyer from the marriage with his wife, Judy Pickett Hoyer, who died in 1997 three daughters: Susan, Stefany, and Anne. He belongs to the Baptists.

Political career and positions

Hoyer was in 1966 as a 27 -year-old for the electoral district of Prince George's County elected to the Senate of Maryland; In 1975, at the age of 35, he became president of the chamber of parliament.

In 1981 he was elected as MP for the 5th district of Maryland in the House of Representatives; since he represents this constituency. From 1987 to 1989, when the Democratic Party had the majority in the House of Representatives, Hoyer had held the position of a whip; 2002, when the Democrats were in a minority position, he was re-elected to this function.
