Stepas Butautas

Stepas Butautas ( born August 25, 1925 in Kaunas, Lithuania, † March 22, 2001 in Kaunas ) was a Lithuanian basketball coaches and players.

Life

College career

1948 graduated Butautas studies at the Kuno kultūros institutas ( KKI ) and taught from 1951 to 1975 on Kauno politechnikos institutas. Since 1962 he was a member of the CPSU. From 1971 he was Head of the Department of Physical Education at KPI, from 1978 head of the Department of Sport at KKI.

Sports career

Butautas was from 1947 to 1953 as player of Zalgiris Kaunas member of the national basketball team of the USSR and won at European basketball championships three gold medals. In 1952 he won the silver medal at the Olympic Games in Helsinki, Finland. After the end of his active career, he was next to his high school teachers specialize in 1958-1964 coach of the women's national teams of the USSR. With the women's selection, he won first time in 1959 the world championship title that could be defended in 1964, and three times the gold medal at the European Championships. From 1967 to 1970 he was then coach of the Cuban national team of men, with whom he participated in the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City and at the final round of the World Basketball Championship in 1970. Between 1975 and 1978 he was also head coach of Zalgiris.

Family

His son Ramūnas (* 1964) is also a successful basketball coaches and players.
