Stéphane Gsell

Stéphane Gsell ( born February 7, 1864 in Paris, † January 1, 1932 in Paris) was a French historian and archaeologist.

Stéphane Gsell came from a Swiss Protestant family. He studied at the École Normale Supérieure from 1883 to 1886 and conducted research from 1886 to 1890 at the École française de Rome, where he wrote a basic study of the Roman emperor Domitian. In 1890 he was appointed lecturer at the École des Lettres in Algiers. The following year he participated in excavations in Tipasa. Then he accompanied 1893-1894 Henri Gaillot during an expedition to the area north of the Aures Mountains. Their findings were published in the Melanges de l' Ecole francaise de Rome and give information about the distribution of the Donatism in the region. From 1895 to 1905 was a professor at the École Gsell in Algiers. He was from 1901 to 1932 Antiques inspector for Algeria and published in 1901 his major two-volume study Monuments antiques d' Algérie, in which all known ancient buildings are listed in the region. 1902 followed his work Archaeological Atlas de l' Algérie, which he completed in 1911. The work contains 50 cards and 500 page commentary. As Professor Gsell taught from 1912 to 1932 at the Collège de France, North African history. In Paris, he began his Histoire ancienne de l' Afrique du Nord. The work was published until his death in eight volumes, but it only extends to the end of the Mauritanian kingdom of Juba II

Gsell is considered a pioneer of the French exploration of Roman North Africa. His monograph on Domitian, also coins and inscriptions systematically auswertete first time, laid the foundation of modern research about this emperor. He also led major excavations of an Etruscan cemetery in Vulci.
