Stephaton

Stephaton was the tradition of the Christian tradition by a Roman soldier, of Jesus Christ on the cross just before his death a sponge with vinegar ( Posca ) to a bar - after Jn 19, 29 a branch of hyssop - stuck to his mouth held ( cf. Mt 27, 48 EU, Mk 15,36 EU, Jn 19,29 EU).

In a private revelation of the mystic and Augustinian nun Anne Catherine Emmerich is based, ie the sponge carrier Abenadar. After the death of Christ, he was believe and baptized in the name of Ctesiphon. What is striking is the similarity of the names sound Stephaton and Ctesiphon, which both come from the Greek.

In Christian iconography, the sponge carrier Stephaton and the spearmen Longinus stand on either side of the cross.
