Stephen L. Mayham

Stephen Lorenzo Mayham ( born October 8, 1826 in Blenheim, New York; † 3 March 1908 in Schoharie, New York) was an American lawyer and politician. He represented 1869-1871 and 1877-1879 the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Stephen Lorenzo Mayham pursued an academic career. He studied law in Ithaca. After receiving his license to practice law, he began practicing in 1848. Between 1852 and 1857 he was Superintendent of Schools in Schoharie County and 1857-1860 Supervisor. During this time he became district attorney in 1859 in Schoharie County - a position which he held until 1862. He sat in 1863 in the New York State Assembly. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party.

In the congressional elections of 1868 for the 41st Congress Mayham was in the 14th electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of John VL Pruyn on March 4, 1869. He retired after March 3, 1871 from the Congress. In 1876 he was a candidate in the 15th Election District of New York for the 44th Congress. After a successful election, he entered on March 4, 1877, the successor of John H. Bagley junior. He retired after the March 3, 1879 out of the Congress.

Between 1883 and 1887 he was a judge in Schoharie County. Mayham participated in the years 1884 and 1892 to the Democratic National Conventions. He was judge of the New York Supreme Court and 1886-1896 presiding judge ( presiding justice). On March 3, 1908, he died in Schoharie and was buried at the St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery.
