Stephen Stubbs

Stephen Stubbs ( born 1951 in Seattle ) is a lutenist and conductor who is dedicated to the historical performance practice.

Life

He studied harpsichord and composition at the University of Washington, where he also began playing the lute and other plucked instruments baroque. After graduation he specialized in England and the Netherlands, and gave in his debut in London's Wigmore Hall in 1976. Between 1980 and 2006, was attended Stubbs in Northern Germany. He has taught since 1981 at the Akademie für Alte Musik Bremen, which merged in 1994 in the University of the Arts Bremen, where he holds a professorship.

He's gone through numerous recordings and a busy concert with ensembles such as Fiori musicali, Musicalische Compagney, Tragicomedia and Teatro Lirico, whose founder he is known as a continuo player. Other partners were the Hilliard Ensemble and Andrew Lawrence-King, Les Arts Florissants and Philippe Herreweghe. The success of his performances of opera La morte d' Stefano Landis Orfeo in 1987 as part of the Early Music Festival in Bruges meant that he conducted operas of the early Baroque world. In 1994 he was awarded the Edison Award.

In 2006 he moved back to Seattle. He founded the Seattle Academy of Baroque Opera for young professional singers and is an adjunct professor at Cornish College of the Arts. Together with Paul O'Dette he is artistic director of the Boston Early Music Festival.
