Stephen Taber

Stephen Taber ( born March 7, 1821 in Dover, New York, † April 23, 1886 in New York City ) was an American politician. Between 1865 and 1869 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Stephen Taber, son of Congressman Thomas Taber II, was born six years after the end of the British - American War in Dover and grew up there. He enjoyed a good education. He then moved to Queens, and went for the agricultural sector. In the years 1860 and 1861 he sat in the New York State Assembly. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party. In the congressional elections of 1864 Taber was the first electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Dwight Townsend on March 4, 1865. He was re-elected once. Since he gave up a third candidacy in 1868, he retired after the March 3, 1869 out of the Congress. In the early years of the Civil War he helped found the Long Iceland North Shore Transportation Co. and served several years as its president. He was Director of Long Iceland Railroad. In 1876, he became the first president of the Roslyn Savings Bank, a position which he held for several years. He died on April 23, 1886 in New York City and was buried in Roslyn Cemetery, Roslyn.
